How to Easily Craft Delectable Sausage Coils

  • 1 lb. Italian sausage (hot or mild, depending on preference)
  • 1 sheet of puff pastry, thawed if frozen
  • 1 egg, beaten with 1 tbsp. water for egg wash
  • Sesame seeds (optional)

Steps to Cook

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  2. Remove the sausage from its casing and roll it into a long, thin snake-like shape, about 1/2 inch thick.

  3. Carefully coil the sausage into a spiral shape, starting from the outside and working your way inward, keeping the coils close together.

  4. Unroll the puff pastry sheet and place the sausage coil in the center. Gently wrap the pastry around the sausage coil, pressing the edges to seal.

  5. Flip the sausage coil over, seam-side down, onto the prepared baking sheet.

  6. Using a sharp knife, make shallow cuts across the top of the pastry, about 1 inch apart, to create a decorative pattern.

  7. Brush the top of the pastry with the egg wash, and sprinkle with sesame seeds if desired.

  8. Bake the sausage coil in the preheated oven for 30 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and the sausage is cooked through.

  9. Remove the sausage coil from the oven and let it rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Cook’s Note

  • For a spicier version, use hot Italian sausage.
  • You can also experiment with different types of sausage, such as breakfast or chorizo sausage.
  • If the sausage coil starts to brown too quickly, you can cover it loosely with foil to prevent the pastry from burning.
  • Serve the sausage coil warm, with your favorite dipping sauces or condiments on the side, such as honey mustard, barbecue sauce, or a creamy dipping sauce.
  • This recipe can be made ahead of time and reheated in the oven before serving.
