Sausage Bread Recipe

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Cook Time: 30 minutes

Additional Time: 1 hour (for dough rising)

Total Time: 1 hour 45 minutes

Servings: 8-10 slices

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups (375g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 package (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 cup (240ml) warm water (110°F/45°C)
  • 2 tablespoons (30ml) olive oil
  • 1 pound (450g) Italian sausage, casings removed
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup (100g) shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 egg, beaten with 1 tablespoon water for egg wash

Steps to Cook:

1. Dough Preparation:

a. In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, sugar, and yeast. b. Add the warm water and olive oil, and mix until a shaggy dough forms. c. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes, until the dough becomes smooth and elastic. d. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.

2. Sausage Filling:

a. In a skillet over medium heat, cook the sausage, breaking it up with a wooden spoon, until browned and cooked through, about 8-10 minutes. b. Add the diced onion and minced garlic, and continue cooking until the onion is translucent, about 5 minutes. c. Remove the sausage mixture from the heat and let it cool slightly.

3. Assembling the Sausage Bread:

a. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). b. Punch down the risen dough to release any air bubbles. c. On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough into a large rectangle, approximately 12x18 inches. d. Spread the sausage mixture evenly over the dough, leaving a 1-inch border on all sides. e. Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese over the sausage mixture. f. Starting from the long side, tightly roll the dough into a log, pinching the seam to seal. g. Place the rolled dough seam-side down on a parchment-lined baking sheet. h. Using a sharp knife, make several diagonal slits across the top of the dough to allow steam to escape during baking. i. Brush the top of the dough with the egg wash.

4. Baking:

a. Bake the sausage bread for 30-35 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the internal temperature reaches 200°F (93°C). b. Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool on the baking sheet for 10-15 minutes.

Cook’s Note:

  • For a spicier sausage bread, use hot Italian sausage instead of mild.
  • You can experiment with different types of cheese, such as provolone or Parmesan, to customize the flavor.
  • Serve the sausage bread warm, either as a main dish or as an appetizer. It pairs well with a side salad or dipping sauces.
