Total Time

1 hour 25 minutes

Servings

Ingredients

  • 1 lb. Italian sausage, casings removed
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 1 red bell pepper, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup cooked rice
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 tsp. dried oregano
  • 1 tsp. dried basil
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. black pepper
  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed

Steps to Cook

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large skillet, cook the Italian sausage over medium heat, breaking it up with a wooden spoon, until it’s no longer pink, about 5-7 minutes. Drain any excess fat.
  3. Add the diced onion and bell pepper to the skillet. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are softened, about 5 minutes.
  4. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute, until fragrant.
  5. Transfer the sausage mixture to a large bowl. Add the cooked rice, shredded cheddar cheese, beaten egg, dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until all the ingredients are fully combined.
  6. Unroll the puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface. Roll it out slightly to create a 12-inch circle.
  7. Transfer the puff pastry circle to the prepared baking sheet.
  8. Spoon the sausage mixture into the center of the puff pastry, leaving a 2-inch border around the edge.
  9. Fold the 2-inch border of the puff pastry over the sausage mixture, overlapping the edges to create a ring shape.
  10. Bake the sausage ring for 30-35 minutes, or until the puff pastry is golden brown and the filling is hot and bubbly.
  11. Remove the sausage ring from the oven and let it cool for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Cook’s Note

  • You can use any type of sausage you prefer, such as breakfast sausage or chorizo, for this recipe.
  • If you want to make this dish ahead of time, you can assemble the sausage ring up to 24 hours in advance and refrigerate it until ready to bake.
  • Serve the sausage ring warm, either as a main dish or as an appetizer. It pairs well with a fresh salad or roasted vegetables.
  • Leftover sausage ring can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated in the oven or microwave before serving.
