Additional Time

1 hour (rising time)

Total Time

2 hours 15 minutes

Servings

8 slices

Ingredients

  1. 1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened
  2. 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  3. 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
  4. 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  5. 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  6. 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  7. 1 pound Italian sausage, casings removed
  8. 1 loaf (1 pound) unsliced Italian or French bread
  9. 1 egg, beaten
  10. 2 tablespoons water

Steps to Cook

  1. In a medium bowl, combine the cream cheese, Parmesan cheese, parsley, oregano, garlic powder, and red pepper flakes (if using). Mix until well blended and set aside.
  2. In a large skillet, cook the Italian sausage over medium heat, breaking it up with a wooden spoon, until it’s no longer pink, about 5-7 minutes. Drain any excess fat and let the sausage cool slightly.
  3. Cut the bread lengthwise into two equal halves. Scoop out the inside of the bread, leaving a 1/2-inch shell on all sides. Tear the removed bread into small pieces and set aside.
  4. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  5. Spread the cream cheese mixture evenly over the bottom half of the bread. Top with the cooked sausage, spreading it out to cover the cheese.
  6. Replace the top half of the bread and press gently to secure.
  7. In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and water. Brush the top and sides of the bread with the egg wash.
  8. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown. Allow the bread to cool for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Cook’s Note

  • You can use any type of Italian sausage, such as sweet or hot, depending on your preference.
  • For a spicier version, you can add more red pepper flakes to the cream cheese mixture.
  • If you have any leftover bread pieces, you can toast them and use them as croutons or breadcrumbs.
  • This stuffed sausage bread can be served as a main dish, appetizer, or side dish.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated in the oven or toaster oven before serving.
